The biggest visual changes are in the taskbar, where the old Quick Launch toolbar was replaced with the ability to pin applications to the taskbar. Buttons for pinned applications are integrated with task buttons. Theses buttons also enable Jump Lists, which allow for easy access to common tasks. Applications on the taskbar can be reordered. To the far right of the system clock is a button that, when hovered or clicked over, makes all windows transparent for a gander at the desktop.

Window management has several new features and improvements. For example, Snap maximizes a window when it is dragged to the top of the screen.

Thirteen additional sound schemes were included with Windows 7.

Windows 7 has an improved boot performance and an improved performance on multi-core processors. Kernel improvements were also made.

A new version of Windows Media Center was shipped with Windows 7, and a Gadget was made available for use in the Sidebar.

Internet Explorer 8 was shipped with Windows 7.
