Overview[ | ]

Tekken 4 is the second game for PlayStation 2, made by Namco. This is the first time for Tekken having 3-Dimensional stages. None of the stages are scrolling 2D-stages, which means every stage in the game have walls. Players could strike their opponent to the wall and continue with wall combos for additional damage. Some stages includes destructible spots, like pillars and statues.

Three new characters makes their first appearance in the series: Craig Marduk, Steve Fox and Christie Monteiro. Christie has basically Eddy Gordo's moves, so she is not so real new character. (Eddy Gordo is Christie's alternate palette swap once completed the game once with her first.) Combot is a robot that imitates other fighters, just like with Mokujin from Tekken 3, but uses only one fighting style per match. Combot replaced Mokujin and didn't get a well reception from the fans. Since the game focuses more on the environments, the game run's slower, but offers additional 60 Hz and Progressive Scan mode fo extra speed and smoother gameplay. This is one of the most criticised(maybe the most) Tekken game in the series, by having the lowest character count in the whole series, slowed up gameplay, which resulted in high level play to poking and quick blows and particularly some characters being broken, especially Jin Kazama. If someone were to look at high scores, almost every top record was made with him. Also, there have been found some combos that are completely inescapable. Players can also save their matches to their PS2 memory card for later to watch again. Any mode except Practice, Training and Tekken Force can be saved fights from.

Arcade Mode and Story Mode[ | ]

Until Tekken 4, Arcade Mode has been the main single player mode, in which player fights through certain amount of stages to beat the game and see the ending movie. Story Mode replaces Arcade Mode, but is still included in the game as an "Alternative King of Iron Fist Tournament 4" with 8 stages. Story Mode goes into each characters' story by showing a Prologue and Epilogue(ending movie). Pretty much like in Tekken 2, it depends on what character you complete Story Mode/Arcade Mode with, you will get that particular character.

Modes[ | ]

Story Mode: The mode that goes more in-depth to characters' stories. In the end an ending movie is shown.

Arcade Mode: Play through 8 stages. The text "You are the champion!!!" will appear if you complete the mode.

Time Attack: Clear 8 stages as fast as you can. (Note, that you need to press Right when on Arcade Mode-option to switch to this mode)

Vs.Battle: Two human players takes on in this mode. Handicaps can be set for more balanced fights.

Team Battle: 1-8 characters per team. Two teams duke it out in this elimination-styled mode.

Survival: The player needs to win as many matches as possible. A small portion of health is regained from each win. The more the player wins, the better he/she is. This goes on, until the character finally loses.

Practice: Players can hone their skills and combos here.

Training: Players must perform 20 pre-determined moves as fast as they can.

Tekken Force: Players go through 4 stages while fighting large groups of Tekken Force soldiers in this 2.5D mini-game.
